From Da Nang to Hanoi: how to get there by train, plane, bus

Known for its sandy beaches and proximity to the scenic Mable Mountains, Da Nang is one of Vietnam's top tourist destinations. A great place to relax on the beach, or spend time hiking in the hills, exploring the sights of the city if you prefer to be on the move. After sunbathing, head north along the picturesque Vietnamese coast and then inland to the country's capital, Hanoi.

A vibrant city of more than 7.5 million people, Hanoi is full of things to see, including very well-preserved colonial architecture, great food and a vibrant nightlife. The route from Da Nang to Hanoi is a popular one, so that means there are many ways to get from one city to another.

The Road to Hanoi

The shortest route by road from Da Nang to Hanoi is 768 kilometers (480 miles), so as you can imagine, it will take a long time. There are regular buses on this route, so if you want to take the road, this is the most affordable option, although not very comfortable for the passenger.

Trains are another option, good if you prefer more amenities, but they won't be much faster than buses, and will usually cost a little more.

Speaking of expensive, there is also a plane from Da Nang to Hanoi. It is superior to all other modes of transportation in terms of speed, and there are many airlines and daily flights to choose from. But, if you're not sure if this is the best way to get from Da Nang to Hanoi, read on for more information on all the options.

Bus

Bus to Da Nang

The biggest advantage of the bus from Da Nang to Hanoi is that it's cheap, so it's a popular way for travelers on a tight budget, however, this long bus trip will not go without problems. Admittedly, most buses traveling this route are sleeper buses, so you get a bed-like seat, meaning space to stretch out and "almost" lie down!

Considering that you will be traveling all night, these sleeper buses are a good option if you fall asleep easily, of course. An added bonus is that although you lose some time traveling by bus, you save extra money per night in the hotel.

The Hoang Long travel company provides more expensive, more comfortable sleeper buses that include luxuries such as air conditioning, TV, steward and snacks, and an on-board bathroom.

The bus will stop several times along the way so you can get off, stretch your legs, and buy food. The prices of these buses are reasonable for the length of the trip, and their schedule suggests that the trip will take about 18 hours.

If you want to save even more money, there is another bus company you might consider. Hanh Café provides a standard bus that has air conditioning, but really nothing else. You will sit in the standard seats, but according to their schedule Hanh Café will get you to Hanoi faster - only 14 hours.

By train

If you don't like the idea of being stuck on a bus for more than 14 hours, the train from Da Nang to Hanoi might be a good alternative. It costs more than the bus, but it also gives you more freedom to get up, walk around the cars, lie down and stretch whenever you want.

There are several trains a day to choose from, and there are several comfort/price options on these trains. First, keep in mind that the train will not necessarily be faster than the bus, but if you are traveling on a tight budget, there is a cheap train option, and that is 2nd class car seats.

Slightly more expensive, you can choose a 2nd class sleeper where you will be traveling with several other people. There are beds, but they are quite hard because the mattresses are thin. But in the 1st class sleeping car, the mattresses are much thicker!

But these are not all options. Some carriages on Vietnamese railroads are operated by private companies that provide a higher level of comfort and luxury. VIP Sleepers with Violetta Express and Livitrans Express cost much more, but you get a higher level of service and comfort for that price.

Depending on the train, the trip by rail takes from 15 and a half hours to almost 18 hours from Da Nang to Hanoi.

Now the fastest way to get from Da Nang to Hanoi: by plane! If you have already decided that the flight will cost you too much, still read on, because there are actually great deals. If you're flying with one of the low-cost carriers, there's a good chance you can find a cheaper ticket than the regular cost. When you get to Hanoi faster than others on trains or buses, it will save you from losing a whole day of travel!

There is a good selection of flights to choose from every day of the week, although keep in mind that you tend to pay more for a ticket if you are traveling on or close to a weekend. You can also get the better deals the earlier you book your tickets.

Keep in mind: at the last minute, the price often goes up quite significantly. Look at the time of day for your trip: often the first flight of the day, which will be early in the morning, is the cheapest.
Flights from Da Nang to Hanoi take about 1.5 hours and are available with VietJet Air, Vietnam Airlines, and Jetstar. Check out their options, but in general you will find that VietJet Airlines is the most expensive and VietJet Air the cheapest.

Don't forget to consider additional fees as well - cheaper airlines may charge for checked luggage, while others may include a 20 kg baggage allowance in the ticket price, so be sure to check these terms carefully between each of the three airlines before making your decision.

Planes from Da Nang to Hanoi are easily the best choice if you want to get to the capital quickly, they won't actually cost you much more than a train. However, if you want to save the most money, travel by bus and enjoy the scenery along the way!
